empty mind

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

empty mind ...
I wonder who is chatting

inside

My Japanese sensei used to say

Empty your heart and mind completely, and receive the haiku as a present into this emptiness.
You can not MAKE a good haiku happen, it has to make itself through your empty mind.
Do not try to be witty or poetic or "deep" or anything ... just let nature do the talking through you.

Selflessness
Bruce Ross

If affective perception determines much of haiku feeling, selfless perception often determines how haiku consciousness exists. For this reason Robert Spiess, the long-time editor of Modern Haiku, preferred the term "feeling" (senses centred on nature, aware) to "emotion" (very strong subjective feeling centred on non-rational mind) when discussing haiku poetics.

At the most basic level the personal "I" is usually left out of haiku. Basically, the personal "I", the Freudian ego and its mental constructs, let us say its emotion, gets in the way of the haiku experience. Empirical procedures and rational thinking that determine the Western mind also get in the way.

The Zen Buddhist idea of an empty mind, the openness to phenomenological presence, is suggestive of an appropriate mental climate.

A Zen saying explains the situation: "One thought follows another without interruption. But if you allow these thoughts to link up to a chain, you put yourself in bondage".

How does one not get bogged down in thought and experience haiku consciousness? A haiku by Kai Falkman offers a response:

the skier stops
to leave room
for the snow's silence

The first two lines of this poem describe the cessation of what Zen Buddhists call the "monkey mind", a continuous flow of thought. Enlightenment or clear mind, the present-tense clarity of perception, cannot occur when the monkey mind is present.
In effect one must clear one's mind to allow things to speak for themselves.
The phenomenological reduction, the skier stopping, accomplished, the snow, its silence, can speak for itself. Here the personal "I" is not used. The poet, his will, is not stopping the skis. The snow's silence is. The "I" is not what is important. What is important is the snow's silence. The stopping is a mere notation leading to the snow's silence. In many ways this poem becomes an evocation of a kind of enlightenment experience.

A monk asked Li-shan: "What is the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West?"
"There is no ‘what' here," said Li-shan.
"What is the reason??"
"Just because things are such as they are," replied Li-shan.

ZEN KOAN METHOD
Empty your Mind and enter in tune with the Cosmic Mind
Lao Tzu Chapter 11

11.Usefulness of Emptiness
Empty your Mind

Thirty spokes are united in one hub (to make a wheel);
But the usefulness(the function) of the wheel depends on the empty space- the center hole of the hub.
Clay is molded into a vessel or a bowl
But it is the empty space within that makes it useful.

Doors and windows are cut out of the walls of a house,
But it is the empty (open) space inside that makes it useful (livable) .

Therefore take advantage of what exists (what the mind receives),
But use the emptiness (to open a way to enter in tune with the Cosmic Mind).

Fresh snow

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

fresh snow -
your whiteness strikes me
once again

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

We were woken up in the early morning by the local policeman.
Grandma Stonefield was missing since yesterday! All are out searching for her, using long poles poking the weeds and brushes at the roadside.
Divers were checking the nearby pond.
Night came so early. By morning it was well below five degrees centigrade.

At sunrise, the search continued.
Dogs from Okayama police department were deployed.
Toward nightbreak, a bark close to the ditch:

fresh snow -
the paleness of her
dead body

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

We often met on my walks to the local shrine.
With her 88 years, she was much more sure-footed at the steep slopes between the rice paddies than myself. We would sit on the small path and chat for a while.
She had lived alone in her old farm for more than 20 years now, tending the vegetable garden and some fruit trees. She was born here in Ohaga and never left the place.

Dear Grandmother, we will miss you so much!

hoarfrost, called "white frost" 白霜 in Japanese

quote
Hoar frost
Hoar frost (also called radiation frost or hoarfrost or pruina)
refers to the white ice crystals, loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects, that form on cold clear nights when heat losses into the open skies cause objects to become colder than the surrounding air. A related effect is flood frost which occurs when air cooled by ground-level radiation losses travels downhill to form pockets of very cold air in depressions, valleys, and hollows. Hoar frost can form in these areas even when the air temperature a few feet above ground is well above freezing. Nonetheless the frost itself will be at or below the freezing temperature of water.

Hoar frost may have different names depending on where it forms. For example, air hoar is a deposit of hoar frost on objects above the surface, such as tree branches, plant stems, wires; surface hoar is formed by fernlike ice crystals directly deposited on snow, ice or already frozen surfaces; crevasse hoar consists of crystals that form in glacial crevasses where water vapour can accumulate under calm weather conditions; depth hoar refers to cup shaped, faceted crystals formed within dry snow, beneath the surface.

The name hoar comes from Old English and can be used as an adjective for showing signs of old age in reference to the frost which makes trees and bushes look like elderly white hair. It may also have association with hawthorn when covered in its characteristic white spring blossom.

Surface hoar is a cause of avalanches when it forms on top of snow. Conditions are ideal for the formation of hoarfrost on cold clear nights, with a very light wind that is able to circulate more humidified air around the snow surface. Wind that is too abrupt will destroy the crystals. When buried by subsequent snows they may remain standing for easy identification, or become laid down, but still dangerous because of the weakness of the crystals. In low temperatures surface hoar can also be broken apart and blown across the surface forming yukimarimo.

Hoar frost also occurs around man-made environments such as freezers or industrial cold storage facilities. It occurs in adjacent rooms that are not well insulated against the cold or around entry locations where humidity and moisture will enter and freeze instantly depending on the freezer temperature.

This haiku has the prescript: "Into the bowels of the earth." Kisa Lagoon (Kisagata) was ravaged by an earthquake in Sixth Month, 1804. The effect, according to Shinji Ogawa, was that the seabed was raised and the "beautiful scenery like a miniature archipelago suddenly became dry land."

When I visited Kisakata in Akita, it was not a lagoon any more, an earthquake in 1804 had lifted the ground and many former islands where standing above the ground.
The landscape is most impressive, often compared to the islands of Matsushima.
