It is said that water boiled in iron teapots called Tetsubin 鉄瓶 is the best for making green tea, which explains the popularity of Tetsubin in Japan. Water boiled in poor-quality iron teapots tastes of iron and thus spoils the taste of green tea.

Initially ironwork production here was dominated by cauldrons, however as the tea ceremony grew in popularity, the iron kettle is said to have been created by making these cauldrons smaller and adding a spout and a handle. Nowadays the ironworkers of this region produce around 35 different products – not only iron kettles but also wind chimes, bottle openers, ashtrays, ornaments, wall hangings and vases.
Nanbu ironware was designated a traditional craft by the Japanese government in 1975.

In 18th century Kyoto, literary men with an interest in Chinese learning rebelled against the formalized manner of the Japanese tea ceremony and took up the Chinese habit of drinking steeped tea. By century's end, this act of defiance had led to the development of the tetsubin, the Japanese cast-iron tea kettle.
This exhibition draws from the outstanding collection of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kramer and features more than 90 tetsubin from the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the affluence of the urban merchant class, which had begun to enjoy steeped tea as well, supported the cost of producing tetsubin with raised decoration and inlays of precious metals.
Elegance in Iron showcases the variety in shape and surface decoration of Kyoto tetsubin while also featuring kettles of northern Japan's Nambu region, where a folk tradition, little affected by Kyoto culture, fostered a dynamic aesthetic in iron tea kettles that complemented the region's robust lifestyle.

Dr. Gabi Greve
studierte Medizin und anschließend ostasiatische Kunst bei Prof. Dietrich Seckel in Heidelberg. Sie hat zwei vielbeachtete Fachbücher über buddhistische Kunst in Japan verfasst, wo sie seit dreißig Jahren als Übersetzerin und freie Schriftstellerin lebt. Mit ihrem Mann bewohnt sie ein altes Bauernhaus in den entlegenen Bergen der Präfektur Okayama. Sie ist Direktorin des Daruma Museums, seit 2004 auch Kompilatorin der World Kigo Database. Von ihren vielfältigen Interessen und Aktivitäten, unter denen insbesondere das Haiku zu nennen ist, zeugen verschiedene sehr lesenswerte Blogs.

Zu ihrem Haiku schreibt sie: Die Altstadt von Tôkyô erinnert nur noch an sehr wenigen Stellen an das alte Edo, das ich so liebe: Nachbarschaften, die noch in Ordnung sind und wo sich jeder kennt und grüßt. Der alte Friseur hat eine Reihe kleiner Bonsaibäume vor seinem Laden. In der Mittagspause sehe ich ihn oft damit beschäftigt. Ein einfaches Bild vom einfachen Leben - wie geschaffen für ein einfaches Haiku.
Mit freundlicher Genehmigung von Gabi Greve, die auch die deutsche Fassung zur Verfügung stellte; wörtliche Übersetzung wurde nicht angestrebt.

Yoshida Kenkô
wurde vermutlich im Jahr 1283 als Sohn eines hohen Verwaltungsbeamten geboren und starb 1350. Er diente zunächst als Hofmeister in einer berühmten Adelsfamilie, später war er Offizier der Kaiserlichen Palastwache. 1323 nahm er in der Hauptstadt an einem Gedichtwettstreit teil, den Prinz Kuniyoshi veranstaltete. Bald darauf folgte er der in seinen waka immer wieder anklingenden Sehnsucht nach Stille und Zurückgezogenheit und trat in den Mönchsstand.

Sein Tzuretzuregusa, etwa mit Aufzeichnungen aus Mußestunden zu übersetzen, ist das wichtigste Werk der in Japan geschätzten Kunstgattung spontaner Niederschriften, ein Klassiker, der noch heute in Auszügen an den höheren Schulen gelesen wird. Ukiyo
bedeutete in der frühen japanischen Poesie die fließend dahintreibende, nichtig-eitle, irdische Welt. Der Begriff geht auf die buddhistische Philosophie zurück. Seit Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts bezeichnete man damit vor allem die Eleganz und die modischen Vergnügungen des Stadtbürgertums (chônin). In den von Sammlern geschätzten Farbholzschnitten des Ukiyo-e, den Bildern der fließenden Welt, haben Künstler wie Suzuki Harunobo, Kitagawa Utamaro, Andô Hiroshige und vor allem Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849) sowohl das mondäne als auch das einfache Leben des Volkes mit seinen Freuden und Leiden sowie die Landschaften Japans dargestellt. Japanische Farbholzschnitte beeinflussten die europäische Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Vincent van Gogh hat 1887 in Paris u.a. Arbeiten von Andô Hiroshige kopiert.
