:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

midday sunshine -
the icicles fall
with a PING

We are in another cold wave,
minus 4 centigrade this morning.
The snow dripps slowly from the roof, forming little icicles of about 5 cm length on each indenture of the tin. They hang in there like the teeth of a saw.

When I was out for a moment, I heared a PING of something hitting metal, one more PING ...
The icicles fell one by one and hit the metal grit of the water drainage,

a natural organ playing the PINGS ...

Full Moon on January 10, 2009

not set
in her ways--
snow moon

George

If skies are clear Saturday, go out at sunset and look for the giant moon rising in the east. It will be the biggest and brightest one of 2009, sure to wow even seasoned observers.

the orbit is not a perfect circle. One portion is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to our planet than the farthest part, so the moon's apparent size in the sky changes. Saturday night (Jan. 10) the moon will be at perigee, the closest point to us on this orbit.

It will appear about 14 percent bigger in our sky and 30 percent brighter than some other full moons during 2009, according to NASA. (A similar setup occurred in December, making that month's full moon the largest of 2008.)

I am NOW

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I was regretting the past and fearing the future.
Suddenly God was speaking. "My name is 'I Am.'"
I waited. God continued.

"When you live in the past,
with its mistakes and regrets,
it is hard. I am not there. My name is not 'I was.'

"When you live in the future,
with its problems and fears,
it is hard. I am not there. My name is not 'I will be.'

"When you live in this moment, it is not hard.
I am here.
My name is 'I Am.'"

Prayer Flags

This leaf reminds me that things happen in nature without our "willing" it.
When it is time, it will fall, no sooner, no later.

It is my teacher on the path of life and death.

Comments from some friends at HH

Nice one, and great image... Do you need 'the', just asking....
Maybe:
holding out
in winter sky
one cherry leaf

or
holding out
in winter sky -
last cherry leaf

Do you think winter will "leaf" it a lone?

GABI answers
as for "in winter sky" or "in the winter sky", my English is not good enough to decide which is better grammar-wise. But for my musical ear in haiku, I prefer the longer version, it reads more smooth to me.
... as for "last" or "one", they are different in meaning to me, and this was the LAST on the tree, so I hang on to shasei.
I let you know when this last one will be gone, it is on my daily walk up to the postbox

It reads great to me.... I agree, "last" is a really key word here.
Nice write.

Friend J.
oh, no... here I come to say I prefer line three to include 'the' simply to maintain
a read-aloud rhythm. Gabi, in all its forms, it is a soothing haiku. Simple and lovely.
holding out
in the winter sky -
the last cherry leaf
only an opinion,

Friend L.
Most of the attention has focused on that last line, but I'm going to offer a slightly different possibility for line 2--'against' in place of 'in'. As I see from your photo, the leaf is part of the twig's silhouette and you can say that it's silhouetted against the sky. Also, there's a usage of 'holding out against' something--in this case, once the leaf lets go, it is the winter sky that will replace it. To my ear, an extra beat in line 2 also removes the rhythmic need for 'the' in line 3.

... I think the haiku is a delight in any form of your chosing.
