Choiceless Awareness

To suspend judgment is difficult. To do so voluntarily, as a witness to one’s own thoughts, is the ‘methodless method’ called ‘mindfulness’ or ‘choiceless awareness’ that is used to achieve a meditative state. Choiceless Awareness is the closest there is to the stereotypical and uninformed impression that meditation is relaxation and letting go and doing nothing. Popularized by Jiddu Krishnamurti, the Indian philosopher and educator, it is the state of being fully aware of the moment without awareness being focussed on any physical or mental image/object/meditation object. It is the state of pure contemplation.


Step 1:
Remind yourself that you exist here and now.

Nobody can live in the past or the future, even though your existence in this world is the sum total of many aspects of reality and experience such as physical makeup, your cultural, social and educational background, thought, emotion, future ambitions etc. The attempt should be to accept life as it exists in the present moment - no matter how banal or stressful, it is all that you have.


Step 2:
Be aware of the activities going on in and around you in the moment.
From obvious and hidden bodily processes to the numerous physical, chemical and biological changes that are occurring simultaneously in the world outside your skin, observe everything.


Step 3:
Start doing everything with awareness.
This may be distracting to do, as it is recommended to be remembered while doing the most mundane, routine things, such as drinking water or walking, such as what you experience when you swallow or how your hands move while you walk.

Here is some advise on suspending judgement
from Isabelle Prondzynski for the haijin of Kenya.

I shall concentrate on just one thing, which is observation. The haiku poet (in Japanese : haijin) just stands back and observes. There is no judgement -- the poet does not tell the reader whether something is nice or awful, but describes accurately what is there, leaving the feelings to the reader.

For instance :

scorching son
and running cloud
bad morning

Here, we have a good observation (scorching sun and running cloud) followed by a judgment (bad morning). As the reader is not given any clue, she or he cannot know why the morning is bad. There is heat and there is running -- so perhaps the morning is bad because someone has
run away in a fit of hot anger? It is better to say so, for instance :

scorching sun
and running cloud --
my wife left me


It is for the reader to judge that this is indeed a bad morning.



dark clouds
moving to west
uncertainly

Here too, the haijin is making a judgement, stating that the clouds are moving uncertainly. My response would be, how does he know? What has he observed? Could it be this :

dark clouds
moving to the west --
first raindrops




The next one is this :

cold weather
over mountain tops --
too humid

The "too humid" is a judgement. Let the reader judge. The haijin will give the reader the facts.

cold weather
on the mountain tops --
falling mist



And here, we get into a judgement praising something nice :

a bright glow
of the flowers abroad
pleasant sight


This too needs to be said through observation rather than judgement :

bright glow
of the flowers outdoors --
my smiling face




And here is a sad one :

children eating
dusty cabbage leaves
sad morning

The reader does not know where the sadness is coming from. Is it the cabbage leaves? Too dusty or too few? Is it another problem which the children are experiencing? Is it a problem which the writer is experiencing? The haijin has to make sure that the reader can understand. Haiku is constantly asking us to look, listen, smell, touch and taste :

children eating
dusty cabbage leaves --
funeral day


It is a funeral day. No one is looking after the children. They eat what they can find. It is a sad day, and now we know why.



Observation is needed here too :

Soweto weather
and poverty together
may God help

The statement here is general. What a haiku needs is a keen observation of a small and particular scene, which makes the reader understand that there is a general point to be made too.



chilly morning
people wear sweater
feeling cold

This haijin has assumed that the people are feeling cold, but that is his own judgement, and he may not be right! The observation could be like this :

chilly morning --
my brother is racing around
with his new sweater

I am not sure about the plural form in English.
It is meant to mean the many different songs of many different birds.
Quite a concert this morning !

And the cicadas out in the background, the odd frog once in a while, the heron family on its way to "work" in the ricefields to the East, putting in a word from high above.

Haiku Riddles and Ego

Ambiguity and yugen (depth and mystery) are wonderful tools.
Most good haiku have more than one level of meaning.

Take for example, this haiku by Basho:

an octopus pot ---
inside, a short-lived dream
under the summer moon



What one person perceives as clear may not be clear to another with a different cultural memory and social context.

a haiku friend answered.

These octopus pots are quite common for fishing in our area in the Seto Inland sea. In some parts, the coast is littered, so to speak, with the bones and souls of warriours from the Genpei war and others.

This haiku by Basho is rather clear. It is not a riddle to me, but full of cultural allusions and information.
It also reminds of the haiku about the dreams of ancient warriors in the summer grass of Hiraizumi.

Maybe our problem with the haiku riddles result from our different cultures where we originate?

Yugen (yuugen 幽玄) is part of many arts of Japan, not only haiku. It is part of the aesthetic aspect of many things here. Especially in the Noh Theater, we see a lot of yugen but that is not identical with riddle, it is much more subtle than that and involves a lot of the common cultural understanding of a man of letters (bunjin 文人), reaching back to ancient China and its early influence on Japan.

The Technique of the Riddle - this is probably one of the very oldest poetical techniques. It has been guessed that early spiritual knowledge was secretly preserved and passed along through riddles. Because poetry, as it is today, is the commercialization of religious prayers, incantations, and knowledge, it is no surprise that riddles still form a serious part of poetry's transmission of ideas.

One can ask: "what is still to be seen"

on all four sides
of the long gone shack

The answer is:
calla lilies

Or another one would be:

spirit bodies
waving from cacti
plastic bags


The 'trick' is to state the riddle in as puzzling terms as possible. What can one say that the reader cannot figure out the answer? The more intriguing the 'set-up' and the bigger surprise the answer is, the better the haiku seems to work. As in anything, you can overextend the joke and lose the reader completely.
The answer has to make sense to work and it should be realistic.

Here is a case against desk haiku. If one has seen plastic bags caught on cacti, it is simple and safe to come to the conclusion I did. If I had never seen such an incident, it could be it only happened in my imagination and in that scary territory one can lose a reader. So keep it true, keep it simple and keep it accurate and make it weird.

Oh, the old masters favorite trick with riddles was the one of: is that a flower falling or is it a butterfly? or is that snow on the plum or blossoms and the all-time favorite "am I a butterfly dreaming I am a man or a man dreaming I am a butterfly."
Again, if you wish to experiment (the ku may or may not be a keeper) you can ask yourself the question: if I saw snow on a branch, what else could it be? Or seeing a butterfly going by you ask yourself what else besides a butterfly could that be?

I will read to you a haiku by my favorite master, a contemporary of J. S. Bach, Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) (the example below was translated by Lucien Stryk in a Penguin collection of Basho's haiku called "On Love and Barley").

"In my new robe
This morning
Someone else"


Let me read it once again but with the lines backwards:

"Someone else
This morning
In my new robe"

There are only three lines, but what richness of meaning. To achieve it Basho uses a well-known haiku convention that is most important to us here. Not all haiku use this principle but most do. It is called the principle of internal comparison.

You compare the meanings of the three lines and consider that they all refer to the same thing, in our terms that they are all "sides" of one hand. This technique gives haiku a unique quality of growth -- an ability to convey so much more emotion than is expected at a first reading.

You generate a whole space of meaning or experience in a dimension that is well beyond that of the three images defined in the three lines individually. Haiku may seem small, but in their case it is certain that size does not matter.

This haiku does not only grow, but actually reverses its meaning back and forth as you keep rereading it.

"In my new robe"
(We think of a new look, something you have not worn before, external appearance, surface...)

"This morning"
(A new day, a beginning...)

"Someone else"
(Me or not me or just a new me...)

But a morning is only one of many mornings; it is the morning after a day and before another. The whole concept of the new, fresh, or of a beginning, is suddenly put in doubt and reversed. "Someone else" seems to sound like an irony for a moment. But if you insist on the "not me" interpretation of "someone else" then you realize that there is never a morning or a day that is a copy of another, and the newness resurfaces again. And so it continues...

The triangle of images seem to be representing aspects of the same experience but they pull us into a paradox, they present a contradiction that cannot be reconciled. Like a koan, this haiku is a riddle that has no static answer. You can only understand it in a dynamic, constantly changing way.

Now granted, this last example may be stretching the meaning of riddle, but riddles don't necessarily have to have answers in order to be riddles.

Definition (2) from Webster's New World Dictionary, College Edition, 1962:
"any puzzling, perplexing, or apparently inexplicable person or thing, as a difficult problem or enigmatic saying; enigma."

And from "The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics," 1974 edition:
"RIDDLE. Essentially a metaphor which draws attention to likenesses between unrelated objects..."


However, in an essay by William J. Higginson, "Haiku Clinic #2" from "Simply Haiku," he warns against using the riddle technique "when a first or last line seems to answer a riddle posed by the rest of the poem."

In "Haiku Clinic #1" (ibid.) Higginson writes, "...the setup and delivery mode, or riddle and solution, a kind of logic, still doesn't work very well in haiku."

I would tend to agree with the last statement. However, I propose that the technique is viable, as Reichhold suggests, if instead of answering the posed riddle explicitly, the haiku leaves the answer up to the reader.

Although I'm sure there will be disagreement, I see the following by Basho as a type of "riddle" haiku:

'Greeting the New Year near the capital'

the man wearing
a straw mat, who is he?
blossoms in spring

komo o kite tarebito imasu hana no haru
straw-mat acc. wearing what-person is blossom 's spring

Barnhill writes:

"In commenting on this hokku, Basho lamented that he lacked the ability to distinguish a mere beggar from a sage, who may live in poverty."

We must also distinguish between a riddle and
something plainly not understandable.
Sometimes it is only because of not enough cultural knowledge, sometimes something expressed in words toooo poetic to fit a classical Japanese haiku and reads like a mix of modern European haiku poetry.

Creating depth or confusion ? The haiku poet is always challenged to choose his words carefully!

Something beyond the concept of simple shasei, sketching from nature, turns the real into the irreal, something strongly filtered through the phantasy and psyche of the poet.
Maybe we could call it : surreal, as in a painting of Salvadore Dali. You can almost see the beard on the face of the smiling me/frog

In Zen, we train to loose the EGO, or rather, feel one with the ALL. In that sense, I am the FROG! I am the butterfly and the dandelion by the roadside. So there is no need to state that in every haiku.

For a number of years I have argued against the lack of punctuation in modern genre haiku. It allows for an ambiguity which is unnecessary and which contrasts with the subtle allusiveness of classical Japanese haiku.

Well, I find this plain confusing. It could be so many things, from animals to furniture. I do not think this poem creates any depth by being so vague.

Two little chicken? Or one kitten? The chair for our firstborn son? A tiny table for the grandchildren who are coming for Easter? A cockroach where the kids have torn out two legs and left the poor corpse on the table?
Still too much to think about and not much to enjoy easily as an image.

What inspired all this was a movie about a rural family with a very small pony as a family member.

Ambiguity in haiku is sometimes useful, but simple confusion is usually not and does not help to produce "depth", but leads the mind straight to its intellectual side, trying to figure out what is going on, who is doing what ... and so missing the initial situation, not being able to see the initial image clearly.

Bruce Ross identifies a "tendency in the fourth generation of American haiku writers of the late seventies, eighties and early nineties unfortunately to frequently offer catchy moments of sensibility that often rely on obvious metaphoric figures.

These American poets desire to create 'haiku moments'. But a subjective ego, call it sentiment or call it imagination, intrudes upon their perception of the object".

In Zen parlance there is no need to "put legs on the snake" - not even poetic metaphysical ones.

The insight of the haiku moment is fresh, new-minted perception, though it may be so ordinarily expressed as to risk failing the "So What?" test unless the reader's reception is similarly attuned.

Haiku offer a glancing opportunity, without the poetic prompting of another, to accept for ourselves how it is.

Blyth says:
"Where Basho is at his greatest is where he seems most insignificant, the neck of a firefly, hailstones in the sun, the chirp of an insect ... these are full of meaning, interest, value, that is, poetry, but not as symbols of the Infinite, not as types of Eternity, but in themselves. Their meaning is just as direct, as clear, as unmistakable, as complete and perfect, as devoid of reference to other things, as dipping the hand suddenly into boiling water."

Zen is commonplace: the ordinary is extraordinary when we are jolted out of our habitual selves; there is no need to hype it up.

“If the tree were strong enough it would manifest nothing.

In other words, Blyth is saying that the writer of hokku must “empty himself” of the desire to “express himself,” to “become a poet,” to “make a name for himself,” and it is only because of that emptiness — like the emptiness of a mirror undimmed by dust — that the writer can truly experience and express the “things” that are the primary matter of hokku.

Danjuro XII and the freedom in Kabuki acting

Freedom is fine; but I get the feeling that many modern-day Japanese have forgotten that freedom comes with responsibility. This concept is found in kabuki, so people who come to watch it will be exposed to the responsibility of freedom as well as freedom's limits.

Think of freedom as a dog that feels free to run around a fenced garden. It feels satisfied because it is not stuck in the house, even though it doesn't have the freedom to go outside the garden.
Freedom exists inside the garden as well as outside.
But there is a barrier.
Nowadays, there is no such barrier.
I think kabuki expresses the freedom that exists within a barrier.

Other examples of somewhat surrealistic, classic haiku include Bashō’s:

tsuki izuku kane wa shizumeru umi no soko

where is the moon?
the temple bell is sunk
at the bottom of the sea



Shuson’s commentary on this haiku underlines its highly subjective and imaginative (even “fanciful”) power: “In his mind Bashō saw the light of the full moon and heard the faint sound of the bell. Although there was no moon in actuality, its absence led him to fly on wings of fancy to a mysterious but concrete world in his imagination.”
Shuson’s comment is a useful reminder that the “mysteriousness”of a perception need not detract from its vividly “concrete” poetic rendering.

O-Tsu must have eaten some poison somewhere ... she came home around nine last night and started with terrible cramps and foam around her mouth ...
The cramps got worse, lasting about three minutes, every 30 minutes or so, she would stretch to almost double her length, then fold and bend to a tiny little ball, then tremble all over. Her breathing was fast and forceful, her pupils huge dark black circles ...

After a fit we would place her on the towel in a more comfortable position and watch her hard breath. Then the next fit distorted her small figure again ...

Around eight this morning, after a sleepless night, she had her last fit, then fell into a deep coma and we thought, well, this is it.

But after about one hour later, she opened her eyes again, this time here pupils were focused and she seemed a bit oriented and recognize us ... and then she becan to recover, sleeping most of the day.

Now (it is about six in the evening as I write this) she is still not oriented and whimpers a lot, but at least she has drunk some water and used her in-house toilet.

We hope she will recover more during this night.

Saturday morning
Another night with watching over O-Tsu.
She is still afraid of all sounds and even her own shadow makes her shriek in fear and jump backwards. Finally she hides in a corner of the room and dozes off.

It was minus five degrees centigrade cold outside at night and we had to keep the house warm as best as we could.

This morning, at least she is oriented in the room and finds her place with the water, even jumps up on the table to drink.
This is going to be a slow process of recovering ...

Saturday evening
What a day ! Cats are quite amazing.
O-Tsu spend most of the day sleeping (happily) in her bed, even licking her hair for a moment when she woke up.
Haiku-kun also finally relaxed (he had been quite upset with his mother's illness) and started snoring like usual.

We hope for a night to get some sleep!



Sunday morning
Sunshine !

A good night for all of us, and O-Tsu is now eating her food. She is still quite wobbely on her legs, but her sleep seems sound and her eyes are clear.
And her son Haiku kun has "talked" to her again, so it seems the cat family is fine again.

This morning, Haiku kun was standing in front of his cat entrance outside, crying with pain and in utter confusion ...

Then he started with the cramps ... now he is in the cat cage in stupor, it is lunchtime by now, and he is very ill, biting his tongue and dripping blood from his moth.
Seems the same poison as O-Tsu.

Evening
Haiku had some bad cramps, then calmed down for the day and had a lick of food in the evening (now), so I hope to see him back on his feet tomorrow.

We had long planned to cut this old three, whith its few bare branches sticking into the sky. But this morning, I decided to let him stand there as long as he was given time by nature ...

According to Hasegawa Kai sensei, the working of the cut is to bring out the relation between cause and effect. Cause is the happening NOW. Effect (something lingering in my mind plus CUT ) pops up.
BUT
in a good haiku, say what is still remaining in your heart first (with a CUTTING word). Meaning, the result, the effect is stated first, then the cause, the reason for what triggered this now.


I saw the white sparkle first, then the sunshine came into mind.

The third example has no Japanese equivalent.
The English reader might read a pause after line one or two, or maybe pivot ... theories are many.


Still struggeling with the CUT.
The lesson is going on till April of 2009, so there will be more theory !

Here is a story send by a friend about a
WOODCUTTER


One day, while a woodcutter was cutting a branch off a tree above a river, his ax fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked,
"Why are you crying?" The woodcutter replied that his ax had fallen into the water, and he needed the ax to make his living.

The Lord went down into the water and reappeared with a golden ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked.
The woodcutter replied, "No."

The Lord again went down and came up with a silver ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked.
Again, the woodcutter replied, "No."

The Lord went down again and came up with an iron ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked.
The woodcutter replied, "Yes."

The Lord was pleased with the man's honesty and gave him all three axes to keep, and the woodcutter went home happy.


Some time later the woodcutter was walking with his wife along the riverbank, and his wife fell into the river.

When he cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked him, "Why are you crying?"

"Oh Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!"

The Lord went down into the water and came up with Jennifer Lopez. "Is this your wife?" the Lord asked.

"Yes," cried the woodcutter.

The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"

The woodcutter replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord.
It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said 'no' to Jennifer Lopez, You would have come up with Catherine Zeta-Jones. Then if I also said 'no' to her, you would have come up with my wife. Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three. Lord, I am a poor man, and am not able to take care of all three wives, so that's why I said yes to Jennifer Lopez."

The moral of this story is:
Whenever a man lies,
it is for a good and honorable reason, and for the benefit of others . . .

Tropical Cyclone MAN-YI has made landfall on the coast of Japan around 2007/07/13 0:00 UTC

At the last observation, on 2007/07/13 0:00 UTC, tropical cyclone MAN-YI is a Tropical Cyclone Category 4 with maximum sustained wind speeds of 64 m/s (231 km/h, 125 knots). Within 100km of its eye there are 1.1 million people. Within 200km there are 1.1 million people.

The storm is currently situated near Okinawa in Japan (a province with a population of 1.2 million).

Powerful typhoon hits southern Japan

A powerful typhoon pounded Japan's southern Okinawa island chain Friday, cutting power to tens of thousands of households and grounding flights with winds up to 100 mph, officials said.

Typhoon Man-Yi has injured 27 people, the Okinawa state government said, many of them knocked to the ground by gusts of wind.

Wind speeds were clocked at up to 100 mph as the storm passed Naha, the regional capital, the Meteorological Agency said.

Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of a steel structure at a golf driving range in central Okinawa knocked to the ground and a parked delivery truck turned on its side.

The typhoon is moving north at 18.6 mph and is forecast to hit the southern main island of Kyushu on Saturday, the agency said. It is expected to then rake Japan's Pacific coast toward Tokyo.

Nearly 98,000 of Okinawa's households, about one-sixth of its total, were without power, it said.

"It is raining hard and the wind is very strong. It looks all white outside," Tomoko Sunagawa, an official of Okinawa Electric Power Co. said by phone from Naha.

Airlines canceled hundreds of flights, mainly those flying between Okinawa and Kyushu.

Heavy rain pouring at a rate of more than 2 inches an hour inundated Kyushu Friday morning, the Meteorological Agency said, with up to 20 inches expected by Saturday.

The season's fourth typhoon was expected to continue to lash the Japanese archipelago, traveling along the southern coast of Honshu through the Kanto region over the long weekend, according to the Meteorological Agency, which warned of heavy rains, floods and strong winds.

The typhoon made landfall on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture around 2 p.m. after hitting Okinawa Prefecture and part of the Amami island group the day before, the agency said. Okinawa came out of the typhoon's heavy storm zone after 20 hours, it said.

The agency recorded an atmospheric pressure of 945 hectopascals near the center of the storm when it struck the peninsula, making it the most powerful typhoon to hit Japan in the month of July since the agency began compiling statistics in 1951.

Landslide warnings were issued for southern Kyushu.

Keita Kamimura, an 11-year-old boy, died after trying to retrieve a ball from a river in the city of Kagoshima and was washed away. His body was found two hours later.

A 76-year-old man died after falling into an irrigation ditch in Kimotsuki, Kagoshima Prefecture.

In Yoshinogawa, Tokushima Prefecture, a 79-year-old man was reported missing, while another man in Nagoya also went missing after being swept away in a river.

Most of the injuries were caused by the typhoon's strong winds, according to local police.

A 60-year-old man fell and broke his hip while trying to reinforce his roof in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture. In Kitakyushu, an 80-year-old woman fell in the morning and broke her right leg.

As of 8 p.m., nearly 20,000 people from about 8,500 households in seven prefectures had been ordered or advised to evacuate, officials said. Many people in other areas also evacuated voluntarily.

Power blackouts continued for about 34,000 households in Kagoshima, mainly in the Amami region, and in Miyazaki, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co.

JR Kyushu Railway Co. said all of its services, including bullet trains, were suspended in Kagoshima and Miyazaki.

A landslide continued to block traffic on the Higashikyushu Expressway between the Miyazaki-Nishi and Saito interchanges in Kyushu. The Miyazaki Expressway was also closed.

All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and other airlines said they canceled more than 643 flights Saturday, mainly those departing or arriving at airports in Kyushu, Shikoku and Okinawa, affecting more than 58,000 passengers.

The storm forced candidates in Kyushu running in the July 29 House of Councilors election to change their schedules, including canceling street speeches and switching to telephone canvassing, on the first weekend of the campaign that officially began Thursday.

The typhoon was forecast to come to within a radius of 310 km east of the Kanto region by 9 a.m. Monday.
In Miyazaki Prefecture, total rainfall topped 500 millimeters in some areas, hitting record local highs for July.

Up to 450 mm of rainfall was projected to fall in the Tokai region in central Japan over the 24 hours to Sunday evening, while 400 mm of rainfall was expected in the southern part of the Kinki region and on the Pacific side of Shikoku, according to the agency.

``The situation is not serious enough to cause a radioactive leak,'' he said. ``But we haven't confirmed the fire has been extinguished yet.''

A fourth reactor at the nuclear plant was not operational at the time of the quake, Tokyo Electric said.

East Japan Railway Co., the country's largest train operator, halted part of its Shinkansen bullet train services, said Takahiro Kikuchi, the company's spokesman. Services on Joetsu Shinkansen lines were suspended from 10:13 a.m. Japanese time, immediately after the quake struck. The Tohoku and Nagano Shinkansen lines have resumed services.

Dozens of injuries were reported after buildings in Kashiwazaki, a town in Niigata prefecture, were toppled by the quake, Kyodo News said. Many offices in Japan are shut today for Marine Day, a national holiday.

Powerful earthquake slams Niigata
Seven dead and more than 830 injured

A severe earthquake wreaked havoc on a wide portion of Niigata Prefecture and surrounding areas Monday morning, killing seven people, injuring more than 830 and destroying 500 houses.

The Meteorological Agency said the quake had a magnitude of 6.8 and registered a rare upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which tops out at 7.

"The quake was so fierce, I felt I couldn't stand up," said a woman who operates a Japanese-style inn in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. She said her home was a mess, with broken plates and an overturned television.

The quake struck at 10:13 a.m., destroying hundreds of houses in Kashiwazaki, firefighters said. Most were older structures made of wood.

"I was so scared — the violent shaking went on for 20 seconds," Lawson convenience store clerk Ritei Wakatsuki said by phone from Kashiwazaki. "I almost fainted from the fear of the shaking."

"There was a sharp horizontal shaking lasting dozens of seconds," gas station employee Hiroki Takahashi told NHK in Kashiwazaki. "I could hardly stand up."

The seven deceased were identified as Etsuko Nakamura, 81, Noriko Nakamura, 78, Sansaku Takahashi, 83, Toshio Tobita, 82, Katsuichi Shimojo, 76, and his wife, Yasuko, 72, all of Kashiwazaki, and Kiyo Igarashi, 79, of Kariwa, Niigata Prefecture, local police said.

Flames and black smoke were seen pouring from the No. 3 reactor at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, which shut down automatically during the quake.

The fire, caused by an electrical transformer, was later extinguished.

Although Tepco initially said no radioactivity was released, it later said an unspecified amount of water containing radioactive material leaked. No further details were immediately available.

In Kashiwazaki, about 200 people escaped disaster when the ceiling of a gymnasium collapsed during a badminton tournament, leaving one person with a slight facial injury.

Niigata Gov. Hirohiko Izumi asked the central government to send Ground Self-Defense Force troops to help with rescue and recovery efforts in the area.

A total of 10,000 people were evacuated by late Monday night in Kashiwazaki and other towns in Niigata Prefecture, local officials said.

The quake, which also was felt in Tokyo, was followed by a 4.2-magnitude quake at 10:34 a.m.

The quake had an intensity of upper 6 in Kashiwazaki and Kariwa, Niigata Prefecture, and in Iizuna, Nagano Prefecture. It registered lower 6 in Joetsu and Nagaoka in Niigata, and upper 5 in Iiyama in Nagano. Its focus was about 17 km under the seabed off Niigata Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said.

A tsunami warning was issued for parts of Sado Island and other coastal areas after the quake but was lifted about an hour later.

The powerful quake caused transportation to grind to a halt and several blackouts were reported.

Tepco said the No. 3 reactor along with three other reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant were shut down.

The Tohoku, Joetsu and Nagano shinkansen lines were halted following the quake but had resumed operations by evening, East Japan Railway Co. said.

A local train car was knocked off the rails while stopped at JR Kashiwazaki Station, but no one was hurt.
Expressways were shut down for safety checks after landslides hit several roads in Niigata Prefecture.
Niigata Airport, which suspended flights shortly after the quake, resumed services after finding no damage.

Water and gas were cut off in Kashiwazaki, and about 35,000 households in Niigata Prefecture and 21,000 in Nagano Prefecture were without power at one point.

Aftershocks continued to rattle the area, including one that came in at lower 6 on the intensity scale. Koichi Uhira of the Meteorological Agency warned that aftershocks could continue for as long as a week.

In October 2004, Niigata was hit by a magnitude-6.8 earthquake that killed 40 people and damaged more than 6,000 homes. It was the deadliest to hit Japan since 1995.

It was about five thirty in the morning. I opened the curtains and saw bright light, like sunshine, on the rooftiles below me . . . but coming from the "wrong" side.
It looked so different from the usual early morning light on the tiles.
Then I looked up in the sky and saw the moon hang over there ... whow ...
