Yes sensei,
it makes a thoughtful human pause when we realize how thin is the veneer between life and death. When we lived in Alaska, for twelve years, I experienced the cold and dark firsthand. Several winters really stand out. We lived without electricity and running water which made for some interesting times! One winter was so cold that a glacier form on the INSIDE of the door! We had to use a maul to break it off to go outside! We had two daughters and bath times were fast, especially for them. We would layer newspaper on the porch right outside the door, and with a bucket of water at the ready I soaped them up, and rinsed them clean while they lifted one foot after the other in what we called "the bath dance"" so their little feet did not stick to the paper!
It sure did feel good to get clean, and to this day, we all truly appreciate a nice hot indoor bath!
