December 8

demons in distress ...

Joodoo-E Ceremony 成道会 Daikodaki 大根焚

WASHOKU : cooking radish soup, Jodoe

5000 radishes are cooked and served in 10.000 portions for two days to the parishers to celebrate the death day of Buddha on December 8, when Shakyamuni Buddha reached the final nirvana.
A bowl of soup costs 1000 Yen.

It was a very cold morning this year in Kyoto and the steam curling out of these many little bowls rising in the air could well frighten away anyone with a bad conscience.

The photo of the daikon looks like squid hatching from eggs.
You are a valuable resource, Gabi.

You may not need the article in L2, as we don't usually count 'soup' in English . . . unless we put it in a container first. For example, a bowl of soup, of a pot of soup.
Today would be perfect for soup here, too. A bit chilly out, but sunny!

Kids must really love their vegetables in Japan. They look so pretty!
I agree with sss, you don't need 'a'. However, you would need 'a', if you were talking about 'a bowl of steaming hot soup'. If just soup,
'steaming hot soup' says it all.

My mother was a great believer in Scotch Broth, Chicken Noodle, Tomato and Cream of Spinach soups. If I think how she would have said this haiku, it would have been with the article--
'a steaming hot soup '.
