He lives with his family in the nearby forest and when he starts cruising the valley, we know its time for nestbuilding ! The pronounciation of his hame is tobi or tombi.
The motto of my hermitage is:
To live whilst looking at the back of the tombi.
鳶の背中を見てくらす!
when he cruises the valley below us ...

The name of the bird by itself is not used as a kigo, we observe the bird all year round.

... alludes to the Xiaoyaoyou (carefree wandering) chapter of the Zhuangzi, in which the philosopher Liezi is depicted as soaring to the skies by rinding on the wind.

[Liezi] could ride the wind and go soaring around with cool and breezy skill, but after fifteen days he came back to earth.

The days are getting warmer.
We have started cooking outside in the garden, enjoying the splendid view of the green mountains while food is simmering.
The big kite and his wife are circling slowly over our valley.

Still remember their calls - one never forgets ...
I used to feed them (there was a couple) when we lived on top of Yagiyama hill in Sendai... you wouldn't believe it, but their favourite was bread soaked in milk, sometimes with a raw egg mixed in ... they would swoosh down, turning the sitting room dark with the shadow from their wings ...
Dear Granny,
here they are wonderful, but I remember at the beach in Kamakura, where they arrived in great numbers, swooping down on the lunch boxes of the beach visitors and were quite dangerous !
GABI
Oh, yes, I remember them circling high above Daibutsu's head ... Must admit I'd go stiff with fear if they attacked my lunch box :-))
