Since some of you asked ...

TIBET : Thumo reskiang:
lamaic art of self-heating

David-Neel studied this art. She saw hermits who sat meditating outside, naked upon snowbanks night after night, with blizzards whirling around them; she saw students of the discipline pass tests by drying on their bodies icy sheets fresh-dipped from Himalayan lakes in midwinter. P. 133, she meditates in the thumo rite, not only to warm herself but to dry flint and tinder so she can light a fire.

Putting them under her dress, she sits and envisions flames rising, crackling around her, until it seems she can see them and she felt deliciously warm. When something made her start awake, she seemed to see the flames die down as if entering the ground, and opening her eyes she found her body burning, her face cherry red and her eyes bright, and the tinder and flint were dry and hot.

We had some very light 'dawn snow' yesterday, the sudden ice on the road causing some accidents, also something to think about. I know many people wonder when they'll get some, while I"m glad it's not troubling us so much.

This can be read a lot of ways, Gabi. It's an excellent ku.

A friend e-mailed me yesterday about the snow in Yokohama. Here, we still haven't had a shovelful yet.

A friend from NY.

Sunday morning --
photos of snow
warms my heart

(a bit of irony caused by the beautiful pictures of GakuRakuan)

The snow is not as bad for the flowers as a deep frost. Frost gets
inside the plants and flowers and destroys their folage. But, snow
stays mostly outside the plants.

Keep warm all you GakuRakuanians!

ciao... chibi

What wonderful peace prevails in these pictures, and of course in your meditation haiku!

Lol! I know the feeling, Gabi...
our snow is thick and heavy too!

Hi Gabi - meditating in the snow???? that's unbelievable.
lovely photo and haiku.

..................................

Gabi, I love the ironic humour as well as the dogged intrepidness I read into this one. Such is life!

It works perfectly for me without ( or with ) the photo of your friend in the garden.

Original and beautiful, Gabi-san.
Stay warm. Spring is coming!

I love your photo and haiku.

Terrific haiku, Gabi - and terrific photo (the haiku works with or without the photo). The impatience wrought by snow upon snow comes forth very well in this poem. Good one, m' dear.

I'm impressed by the beauty of your haiku Gabi san. The repetition of snow as a meditation, nature's silent mantra... mmm... this poem says a lot very simply. It works for me as a stand-alone ku, or a haiga. Thanks for posting this one.
