winter storm
whatever happens
I take as "the best" --
winter storm
Two large low-pressure systems with cold air over the Sea of Japan, heading down ...
with whipping wind and all ...
a typhoon by any other name ...
and maybe 24 more hours to go ...
what a scene -
colored leaves are blown
before they fall
Outside the window, colored leaves are blown by.
They might have made it on their trees for a bit longer,
if it was not for these bursts of super-strong wind.
In Utsunomiya town they had the first frost of this year on the morning of November 6. About eight days later than usual.

New Zealand
The value of conservation is better understood by an appreciation of lost biodiversity. New Zealand's greatest biological loss is 42 percent of its' terrestrial birds since human settlement 700 years ago. The 57 extinct birds evolved in an isolated land, and without mammal predators, developed various levels of flightlessness, ground feeding and nesting habits, and fearlessness over millions of years.

quote
The theory of relativity is synonymous with the name of Albert Einstein, who gave to the world a new concept pertaining to the interrelationship of the energies of life. It is the Kabalarian intention to establish a new philosophical concept of relativity applicable to
the spiritual quality of time.
The understanding of time is a challenging mental exercise. It is easy superficially to equate time to the position of the earth relative to the sun and even the graduations of changes with civilizations, geological periods, and celestial positions. However, there is a much more subtle yet profound recognition of the value of time and the intelligence of time.

calendar time
A calendar is a system of organizing days for social, religious, commercial, or administrative purposes. This is done by giving names to periods of time, typically days, weeks, months, and years.
The name given to each day is known as a date.
Many civilizations and societies have devised a calendar, usually derived from other calendars on which they model their systems, suited to their particular needs.

dokuraku
独楽 dokuraku hitori de tanoshimu 熊谷守一 Kumagai Morikazu (1880―1977) to enjoy his garden all by himself - to enjoy life |
Kumagai Morikazu
is mostly recognized as a representa-tive painter of the Japanese modern age. Kimura Teizo (1913-2003), a Nagoya art collector, first discovered Kumagai's talents and assisted him in various ways throughout his life. When they first met, Kumagai was 25 and Kimura, 59 but they formed a bond that lasted a lifetime. Many of Kumagai's works are simple and offer the viewer a calm and nostalgic feeling.
Although Kumagai is known generally as a western-style painter, he left behind various styles of artwork, including Japan-ese paintings and calligraphies. Kimura bought more than 100 pieces of his work and his ability to identify authentic talent was amazing. Even after Kumagai's death, Kimura's collection of Kumagai's paint-ings grew year by year.
Kimura and his wife donated the collection to the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. This collection consists of about 50 oil paintings, 100 Japanese-style paintings, 40 calligraphies, and 20 sculptures and paintings on pottery, which gives the entire picture of Kumagai's artistic output, offering an interesting insight into the diversity of Kumagai's world.

For the last thirty years of his life, after loosing two children to disease, he lived in a home in Tokyo, with a small garden, that turned out to become his paradise. He put up tree stumps in six locations to enjoy the view, spending hours to observe the animals, from the smallest ants to the bigger birds and the cats in the neighbourhood.
He could stare at a puddle
until he had grasped
the essence of raindrops.
He could lie on his back on the earth, watching the sun pass through the trees and observe the changes of shadows, the bees and the butterflies, the little flowers and the weeds.

first cold spell clouds
sudden cold spell -
waiting for a friend
at the station
The weather has suddenly changed, over night, so to say.
Rain and cold wind from Siberia pound this side of Japan, while typhoon 14 is brewing in the south.
Hokkaido is expecting the first snow of the season.
And we plan to have dinner outside . . . ? !
Well, it was too cold for anything outside.
And now, on the morning of 27, it was just five degrees centigrade ... brrr ... and we will be shivering through a cold day.
Our friend is sketching the landscape.
We had some splendid sky formations over the mountains and tanada rice fields ... and a splendid sunset pink storm clouds raging in straight from Siberia ...
next morning
sudden cold spell -
I need another thick
blanket

empty mind
empty mind ...
I wonder who is chatting
inside
My Japanese sensei used to say
Empty your heart and mind completely, and receive the haiku as a present into this emptiness.
You can not MAKE a good haiku happen, it has to make itself through your empty mind.
Do not try to be witty or poetic or "deep" or anything ... just let nature do the talking through you.

Selflessness
Bruce Ross
If affective perception determines much of haiku feeling, selfless perception often determines how haiku consciousness exists. For this reason Robert Spiess, the long-time editor of Modern Haiku, preferred the term "feeling" (senses centred on nature, aware) to "emotion" (very strong subjective feeling centred on non-rational mind) when discussing haiku poetics.
At the most basic level the personal "I" is usually left out of haiku. Basically, the personal "I", the Freudian ego and its mental constructs, let us say its emotion, gets in the way of the haiku experience. Empirical procedures and rational thinking that determine the Western mind also get in the way.
The Zen Buddhist idea of an empty mind, the openness to phenomenological presence, is suggestive of an appropriate mental climate.
A Zen saying explains the situation: "One thought follows another without interruption. But if you allow these thoughts to link up to a chain, you put yourself in bondage".
How does one not get bogged down in thought and experience haiku consciousness? A haiku by Kai Falkman offers a response:
the skier stops
to leave room
for the snow's silence
The first two lines of this poem describe the cessation of what Zen Buddhists call the "monkey mind", a continuous flow of thought. Enlightenment or clear mind, the present-tense clarity of perception, cannot occur when the monkey mind is present.
In effect one must clear one's mind to allow things to speak for themselves.
The phenomenological reduction, the skier stopping, accomplished, the snow, its silence, can speak for itself. Here the personal "I" is not used. The poet, his will, is not stopping the skis. The snow's silence is. The "I" is not what is important. What is important is the snow's silence. The stopping is a mere notation leading to the snow's silence. In many ways this poem becomes an evocation of a kind of enlightenment experience.
A monk asked Li-shan: "What is the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West?"
"There is no ‘what' here," said Li-shan.
"What is the reason??"
"Just because things are such as they are," replied Li-shan.

ZEN KOAN METHOD
Empty your Mind and enter in tune with the Cosmic Mind
Lao Tzu Chapter 11
11.Usefulness of Emptiness
Empty your Mind
Thirty spokes are united in one hub (to make a wheel);
But the usefulness(the function) of the wheel depends on the empty space- the center hole of the hub.
Clay is molded into a vessel or a bowl
But it is the empty space within that makes it useful.
Doors and windows are cut out of the walls of a house,
But it is the empty (open) space inside that makes it useful (livable) .
Therefore take advantage of what exists (what the mind receives),
But use the emptiness (to open a way to enter in tune with the Cosmic Mind).
