It was amazing to see the two little yellow ones suddenly disappear, when a cloud covered the late autumn sun and the valley fell into deep darkness ... all of a sudden.

Thanks to all my friends from WonderHaikuWorlds for the translations !

...........................................

Some friends thought the use of FINAL was too much of a personification here, leading to the death of the butterflies ...

I used it to mean the final moment for myself,
when I could not see them any more, after watching them for about two minutes, they simply vanished in mid-air when the late sunshine stopped to fall on them and they were ... gone, invisible, it was final for me ...

If you extend the meaning of FINAL as seen of the life of the butterfly, this is a different way of interpretation
(I might have intended or not ;) ).

This is a scene I can only observe in late autumn sunshine and enjoy every year to the fullest !

Withered branches

Lesson about the CUT, cause and effect

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

枯れ枝や 朝日に光る白い苔

withered branches -

in the morning sun

朝の日や枯れ枝に光る白い苔
asa no hi ya kareeda ni hikaru shiroi koke

morning sunshine -
white moss sparkles
on withered branches

NO CUTTING WORD ... NO Japanese Equivalent
just for the sake of this exercise, using an inversion of line 2 and 3 which I do not favour in my haiku.

morning sunshine
on withered branches
the white moss sparkles

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

We had long planned to cut this old three, whith its few bare branches sticking into the sky. But this morning, I decided to let him stand there as long as he was given time by nature ...

........................... a bit of Haiku theory

According to Hasegawa Kai sensei, the working of the cut is to bring out the relation between cause and effect. Cause is the happening NOW. Effect (something lingering in my mind plus CUT ) pops up.
BUT
in a good haiku, say what is still remaining in your heart first (with a CUTTING word). Meaning, the result, the effect is stated first, then the cause, the reason for what triggered this now.

I saw the white sparkle first, then the sunshine came into mind.

The third example has no Japanese equivalent.
The English reader might read a pause after line one or two, or maybe pivot ... theories are many.

Still struggeling with the CUT.
The lesson is going on till April of 2009, so there will be more theory !

Kireji, the CUT in haiku !

Philosophy

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The self is not something that one finds.
It is something that one creates.

-- Thomas Szasz (1920-)
American Psychiatrist

............................

for haiku, it is often the other way round for me:

A haiku is not something that one creates.
It is something that one finds.

How about your haiku creation process ?

............................

Dear Gabi San,
Thanks you much for your continuous help to create.

With due honour to the American psychiatrist I may say that according Indian philosophy, our belief, the divine like the tao is already present in us and outside us. We have to contact it to find ourselves. A way of thinking it may be, as the modernist may say. but it is like is-ness, am-ness.

Now the next about Haiku as you invite, I have just penned these three lines-

Everything is there;
you have to put them in the
right place to create.

Warmly-

More thoughts on philosophical haiku as opposed to pure shasei haiku

After doing a little cursory research, it seems that the term 'philosophical', when applied to haiku, is a catch-all term for haiku which: have for subject matter an idea or concept; draw a moral; present or hint at a religious belief system; incorporate metaphysical elements; etc.
