Halfpipe competitor Kazuhiro Kokubo was banned from attending a ceremony Wednesday to welcome Japan to the athletes Olympic village for being shabbily dressed at Narita airport in Japan before departing for Vancouver.

‘‘I know I made a mistake. I won’t let it affect the competition,’’ said Kokubo, who was spotted at the airport with a loosened tie and his shirt hanging out of the back of his trousers.

He also said he is unconcerned by the quality of opposition he will be up against in the men’s halfpipe in Vancouver and insists the Winter Olympics are nothing special.

‘‘I don’t feel any different. For me the Olympics is just another snowboarding event. It’s no big deal,’’ Kokubo said.
