summer 2009

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

this summer !
only rainclouds in the east
rainclouds in the west

or

this summer !
only rainclouds rolling to the east
rainclouds rolling to the west

This is one of the worst summers in Okayama history ... and all of Japan, for that matter.

Yet I can enjoy to watch the clouds in my valley sometimes, to lighten me up in this dreary summer situation. The house inside is rather dark all day ... not enough light for humans and vegetables.

the coldest summer

  1. I like the ku very much, Gabi, but when I read it I thought of drought. Rain everywhere but where you are. Then I ready your comment in parentheses and realize you are talking about too many rain clouds. It could work in both directions.

  4. Well Gabi, it's no different in Eastern or Central Canada
(we spent most of July in Eastern Canada, and we live in
Central Canada), and we're headed now for the U.K.....
where the long range forecast is mostly rain. Grrrrrr! This
is the summer that wasn't. And it follows the winter that
seemed to be endless. We were really hoping for sunshine
and fair weather. At least you made a haiku out of it.

  7. As they say, Gabi, it never rains but it pours. Sorry your summer has been so wet!

Nice haiku, though. I was wondering about:

    this summer!
    rain from the east
    rain from the west

but that may not appeal to you.

  10. Ireland and Japan have something in common. Little rainsoaked islands, with little rainsoaked poets

  11. Greetings Gabi from a dry and envious downunder

    I like this.

I question the need for the exclamation mark in L1 and note that if used it does not require a space before its use.

May I ask, do you in Japan ascribe further meaning to the points of the compass? We would look upon the east as birth, beginnings, newness and the west as death, endings and staleness.

  12. Thank you all for your kind remarks and suggestions.

One good thing about a rainy day is that I can observe the rainclouds rolling from left to right in our valley ...
And I prefere the ! this time, it is really an exceptional summer that deserves a special exclamation mark as a cut marker ... grin grin ..

The west is the area of the Amida Paradise in the West, GokuRaku Joodo, the Western Paradise

We have a special Buddha for each direction, with different functions, and one for the center, alltogether five great directional Buddhas

East is the place to look for in the morning, fold your hands in prayer and greet the sun (as in Shinto rituals, and most of my farmer friends here do every day).

There is a lot more about the five directions in Japan (the center is always included), I try and find more for you.
